From Studio to Spotlight: Preparing for the PMA Craft Show as a Glass Artist

For artists, the PMA Craft Show, hosted by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is one of the most sought-after events in the art world. This juried show offers a unique opportunity for artisans to showcase their creative works and connect with art collectors, galleries, and fellow artists. But preparing for such a prestigious show isn’t just about creating stunning pieces—it’s a journey of meticulous planning, artistic refinement, and personal growth.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how I prepare for the PMA Craft Show.

A few weeks before the show I start creating my pieces.

Each piece spends a few days in the annealer, where it cools slowly so that it (hopefully) doesn't crack or explode. I built this annealer out of a metal trailer when I originally set up my studio, it still works great.

When they've cooled, they go back to Brett for cold working, where he balances and polishes them.

Once they're fully polished I decide which ones I want to take to the show.

Then George packages them up in envelopes of bubble wrap and places them in large plastic bins that are great for stacking inside my van.

As we're doing that, we're also preparing the booth.

Sometimes that means I'll be re-designing and building out my indoor booth, or ordering new tent sides for my outdoor booth.

For this show my lovely assistant George put a fresh coat of paint on my Emperor Bowl holder and pedestals.

My assistant Pam makes sure I have enough promotional materials, you can never have enough business cards!

Then, we go over my packing list and make sure I haven't forgotten anything, and double check that I have all of the paperwork that I need for show load in, because each show has their own unique load in instructions.

The day before I leave, George and I pack the truck, making sure everything is neat and organized and most importantly, not going to make noise when I'm driving.

I usually drive alone, but this time Jerry is coming with me!

After that's done, we hurry up and wait.

Then, I'm off to the show. Will I see you there?
